Super Morzine track: a warning 4

Had a great day out on the hill yesterday with some friends from London – I took them to a lot of the unofficial singletrack around Les Gets and Super M.  When we got up the Super Morzine bubble in the afternoon we saw a new sign pointing the way back to Morzine for mountain bikers. I had an idea where this went already but thought we’d check it out. Basically the powers that be have officialised a hikers path back down to Morzine. In previous years they’ve been placing many ‘No Bikes’ signs along this trail – most likely to avoid a bike / walker crash. However they’ve now opened it to bikers.

Now the warning:

This path is super technical, rooty, rutted, muddy, and steep.  It’s a great track down for an advanced rider, but certainly not for beginners. Unfortunately they’ve not explained this at the top – so I can see there being plenty of newcomers to biking and the area thinking that it’s a good way back to Morzine.  It should be marked as a black run basically. I will be asking them to state this at the top – I don’t want any of our guests going down there without knowing what’s coming!

The sign to watch out for:

  1. [...] So the first one is a new descent route for walkers that they have been working on. It leads from the top of the SuperMorzine back to the “Suspension Bridge”, some of this route uses an old unofficial descent that has had many different names (the SuperMorzine Singletrack, the 1hr10 etc), so the alternative route is marked “Descent VTT” and was referred to by Guy in http://www.ridemorzine.org/2009/07/super-morzine-track-a-warning/ [...]

Still no decent warning sign up on this, seen plenty of XC victims careering towards it from the bubble.
The signing in the whole pds still needs work. It seems the guys in Les Gets and Avoriaz can build decent trails but in Morzine just some guy with a mower is all they can manage.

I have forwarded your (and our!) concerns to the local tourist office… hopefully a better sign will suffice for now.

peter, sure the super morzine needs some clearer signage, not to mention the rest of the area but i can’t agree with ur comment about the mower. most of the stuff that drops off the side of the pleeny is awesome, the highlight of many of my trips to morzine. with the super morzine, another superb run for those that like it rough and the new sections at the top now the super morzine side is lookin even better!

the biggest thing required in morzine is some track maintenance. we were there in mid august and the pleeny was in an awful state and the bike shop nearest the pleeny implied that there would be no more maintenace this season! i heard the new mayor has a better attitude towards bike scene so maybe things will get better? we’d love to give some feedback if we felt it would be heard.
